On the night of his betrayal and arrest three things happened between Our Lord and his disciples in the Upper Room.
First Jesus gave them the New Commandment. They were to love each other the way he had loved them. So when any Christian churches or individual believers grow cold or indifferent in their love to their fellow Christians across the traditions – across the road – across the room – they are breaking the New Commandment. “Lord, show us how to love each other.” That is the road to Christian Unity.
Then during supper Jesus took the bread, blessed it, broke it and gave it to his disciples saying, 'This is by body given for you’. After supper he took the cup and said, ‘This is my blood shed for you and for all. Do this in remembrance of me.’ Christians cannot rest until they find a way of sharing together in the sacrament that now divides them. Nothing short of full communion within the body of Christ will suffice. One body and one bread. That is the road to Christian unity.
Finally, also during the supper Jesus rose from the table, laid aside his outer garments, took a towel and basin and began to wash the feet of his disciples. What Jesus did for his disciples he commanded all of us to continue doing for one another. Foot-washing is the liturgy of service following the liturgy of worship. Only when Christians of all traditions join together in service to those around them are they living in the way of Christ. This is the road to Christian unity.
